Landon’s Adventure-Inspired Bedroom

After sharing a room for most of their siblinghood, both of my kids now have their very own bedrooms! To be honest, I loved having them in the same space with their two twin beds pushed up next to each other. Every night I would snuggle between them to read bedtime stories and it was always a highlight of my day. But at six and four years old respectively, they were ready for their own spaces and I was ready for some new design projects.

First up: Landon’s room!

Landon’s space is inspired by all things “adventure” and accented with a heavy dose of vintage and thrifted treasures. He’s a typical four year old dude with a fondness for superheroes, trucks, sports, etc., so an adventure theme seemed like the perfect way to merge his interests together. Once we had a loose theme nailed down, all sorts of treasures manifested before our eyes. A telescope here, a ship wheel there. The secondhand gods certainly delivered!

After painting his room blue, this wall-mounted shelf from ReStore served as a jumping-off point for decorating the rest of the space. I think it was originally used as a bathroom cabinet but the wood tones and scale were perfect for housing treasures without having to be too precious.

I loved filling in the shelves with various memorabilia (that’s a photo of John and his dad at Disneyland!), matchbox cars, beach rocks from our travels to Cambria, vintage basketball cards, wooden ships, and other tiny details.

My style definitely errs on the maximalist end of the design spectrum and it makes me so happy to see all these little collections come together.

This red wire rack was once used to corral the kids’ endless stream of artwork but when it quickly overflowed, I realized that it would be fun hang it vertically on the wall.

Since Briar upgraded from a twin to a full-size bed in her new bedroom, I was determined to find a trundle frame for Landon so we could keep both kids’ twin mattresses. When this wooden frame showed up at one of our local thrift stores, I couldn’t pass on the $20 price tag! Plus, I’ve been oddly obsessed with trundles since I was a kid (along with stairs, bunk beds, and twisty slides into swimming pools!). The whole point of parenthood is just to live out your unrealized childhood dreams, no?

John and I thrifted the patterned rug on Bainbridge Island during our honeymoon to the Pacific Northwest. We bought it and then promptly shoved it in a too-small box at the local post office to ship back to our apartment in Pasadena. Memories! It feels extra special that it has found a new home in Landon’s bedroom. In fact, almost everything in this space was found secondhand or simply repurposed from other rooms in our house. Good design doesn’t have to be expensive!

As soon as I laid eyes on this funky train lamp from the Salvation Army, I snatched it right up (and proceeded to carry it awkwardly around the store)! It was only $10 and it lends so much character to his nightstand.

Between both kids, we have hundreds of books stashed around the house. It was super fun to curate an assortment specifically for Landon, although truth be told, he defaults to that damn Star Wars encyclopedia every. single. night.

At the foot of the bed stands this medium-sized bookshelf. I originally wanted to wallpaper the back of it but then decided to freehand paint some stripes instead. Just don’t look too close ;)

I’m thrilled with the way this room came together, but most importantly, Landon loves it, too!
